Before bringing your growler back in for a refill, you should always clean it out thoroughly to prevent the growth of bacteria and to guarantee the freshest taste. Nothing competes more with a fresh batch of craft brew than the leftover hint of old beer. While proper cleaning of your growler is essential, the good news is it’s easy.
In a perfect world, you would clean the growler as soon as you finished consuming the contents. We realize this isn’t always possible, so the best approach is to store it in a cold environment to slow the growth of bacteria. This means you should store it in a cooler or refrigerator until you have time to clean it.
Turn the tap water on hot. Fill the growler while swirling the water around as you go. You should repeat this at least three time to make sure you get everything out. If you use soap, don't use too much as this can compromise the taste of the brew you’re about to fill it with. Air dry on a rack or towel upside down. Make sure it dries thoroughly, or you can risk bacteria growth, categorized by a dank, pungent aroma.
An alternate method is to use a growler cleaner tablet. Fill your growler with warm water, add 1 tablet and let dissolve. Soak for 10 minutes then empty your growler and rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary.
Once you have cleaned your growler, don't leave the cap on which could – you guessed it – harbor bacteria inside. Circulation of air is a good thing. Just be sure to bring the cap with you when you visit us again.
